Human Rights Education Center Remodel & Expansion
The story of our community's 28-year battle with the neo-Nazi Aryan Nations will be portrayed in a permanent exhibit with special attention to Father Bill Wassmuth and the Kootenai County Task Force on Human Relations.
Tales of the Coeur d'Alene Tribe will also be featured in a permanent exhibit. Additionally, an oral history project is planned to record individual human rights-related memories that should not be lost to posterity.
The building will also house a human rights resource collection and a computer lab to supply teachers, youth group leaders, and parents with useful information and materials to supplement what is now available to them in their classrooms.
A community room will do triple service as a classroom, a meeting space, and video theater. A regular film series will be scheduled showing documentaries of human rights issues as well as success stories around the world. The meeting space will also be used for a speaker's series and discussion groups. Because of the proximity to NIC and the entire education corridor, its use as a supplemental classroom space is another consideration.
